Slippery conditions reduced this game to 10-man rugby, with England weathering the weather the better. Wilkinson again was the pivot for England's victory, scoring all the points over a disappointing French team.

When Jason Leonard came on as a replacement earlier for a blood bin, and later in the game as a full replacement, he won his 112th test cap, passing Phileppe Sella's previous world record of 111.
