MATCH NOTES
A depleted England side saw records tumble. South Africa's 7 tries were one better than the 6 scored in 1984. The 58 points were better than the 44 scored in the 1999 Rugby World Cup quarter final and the 48 point margin was almost double the 26 scored in that 1984 match.

Michael Brown, Schoefield, Crompton and Winters were making their test debut for England. 34 year old Kevin Yates reappeared in the England side after ten years. He broke John Bentley's England record of nine years and 44 days for the longest gap between tests.
