MATCH NOTES
Berrick Barnes was playing his first test for Australia. Gerrard was injured just minutes after replacing Mortlock. His injury was to keep him out of the rest of the World Cup tournament. Elsom's hattrick was the fastest by a forward in a World Cup match. Frier scored his first try for Australia. Kusumi was playing his first test for Japan.
