South Africa 64, United States 15 in Montpellier (World Cup, Pool A)

South Africa won by 49 points. I predicted South Africa by 35.

Previews

This should be a straight forward win for South Africa who will no doubt rest a few of their top players. A south African second XV will still be too tough for the ‘Yanks’.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-South Africa 7th, USA 18th

France 64, Georgia 7 in Marseille (World Cup, Pool D)

France won by 57 points. I predicted France by 30.

Previews

Georgia has most of its players playing professional rugby in France at various levels. This will be an advantage in so much as they ‘know’ the French play. The Georgian forward pack should just about hold its own against what is becoming a dominating French pack. Once the ball is out the French will be too skilful and will score easily especially in the second half as the Georgians tire. Watch out for that Georgian try. They will erupt and for them that moment will be their World Cup victory.

Argentina 30, Ireland 15 in Paris (World Cup, Pool D)

Argentina won by 15 points. Exactly what I predicted.

Reviews

Ireland were the second ‘Home Nations’ team eliminated from the 2007 Rugby World Cup finals. Argentina has proved the point that they must be included in an international tournament, either joining Six Nations or Tri-Nations competitions.

Previews

Ireland’s chances of making the quarter-finals are almost nil. They must defeat Argentina and then hope that Georgia at least draws with France. Realistically we should see Argentina go through to the Quarter-finals at the top of their group.

Uganda 42, Madagascar 11 in Antananarivo (CAR Africa Cup Final)

Reviews

Uganda winning wasn’t a complete surprise. It was the margin that has raised eyebrows in African rugby. Madagascar was expected to win in fron of the expected 35,000 crowd.

Previews

Madagascar has the home ground advantage in this tournament and should carry off the trophy. Uganda has been the surprise package this season and may lift the trophy.

RUSTY WALLABIES NOT CONVINCING

Australia produced their least convincing win of the tournament with a wobbly win over lowly Canada. Perhaps this is the lull before the storm.

FIJI IN DRAMATIC UPSET

Fiji through to the quarter-finals

Fiji won what was arguably the most dramatic upset at any World Cup tournament to date. In a pulsating match in which, especially in the second half, Wales nearly pulled back from the brink of disaster, the Fijians’ passion and physical strength saw a last minute try that wrested the match from the Welsh.

Previews

This is yet another must-win match for both teams. For Italy a win would mean playing in the quarter-finals for the first time at a rugby world cup. Italy has played poorly whilst Scotland has not set its pool alight. Italy lost by 50 or so points to New Zealand, Scotland lost by 40 to the Kiwis.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Scotland 7th, Italy 10th

Prediction: A close game, Italy just has not been good enough to enthuse. Scotland a win by 5 points.

NEW ZEALAND EASE INTO QUARTER-FINALS

Roko Rocks in for 3 tries

New Zealand continued their winning way towards the quarter-finals with an easy win against the Romanian ‘Oaks’.

New Zealand won by 77 points. I predicted New Zealand by 60.

Previews

The Romanians will be playing for pride and to prevent New Zealand reaching the century mark. Romania has been disappointing and their only win was a close 14-10 against Portugal. New Zealand’s team will be virtually a second XV so that key players are rested. New Zealand’s second XV notched 100 points against Portugal and could do the same here. Romania’s forward pack, if it plays up to scratch will be about all they can hope to match the Kiwis at.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-New Zealand 1st, Romania 15th.

POLAND RUN AWAY WITH GAME

Previews

Poland began the first round with a very clear win over the visiting Andorrans. Playing away does make a difference but providing the Poles can take their top players they should still be stronger than the home side. Andorra celebrates the 20th anniversary of the founding of their rugby union.

GERMANY TOO STRONG FOR NEIGHBOURS

Germany retain the Alpen Cup

The Alpen Cup is now played annually between Germany and Switzerland. Last year Germany won 40-10 in Bern, Switzerland. The German team, without their France-based professionals proved too strong for their neighbours. Germany led 35-3 at halftime.

Germany 49, Switzerland 13 in Frankfurt (Alpen Cup)

Germany won by 36 points. I predicted Germany by 20.

Previews

Germany would appear to be one of the new breed of European rugby nations. They now have a regular outing against a neighbouring country from a lower division in the FIRA-AER competition. This is a way of promoting the game world-wide. This is a move fully endorsed by RugInt. Last September Germany travelled to Switzerland and defeated the home side 40-10. Switzerland will have a torrid time holding the Germans, who will be without some of their France-based players.

Top French-based players missing are Mathieu Franke, Clemens von Grumbkow, Alexander Widiker, Timothy Coly, Sascha Fischer (retired?), Pierre Faber, plus

Bodo Sieber (South Africa) and Mustafa Güngör (injured?)

Alex Pipa didn’t play for Germany last year but I’m sure he played for Germany in the past.

Baracat, Wacha, Wiedemann, Alexander Hug, Pyrasch and Dennis Walger did not play for Germany last year and I’m assuming they are new ‘caps’.

Original selections Benjamin Simm, Mathias Pipa, Gerrit van Look and Michael Kerr had to be replaced.

Rugbyinternational.net now has two ‘outside’ writers adding data and opinion to this web site. RiJ newsletters come from Japan and now data and comment from ‘The Iron Fist’ can be found on some match reports (France v Argentina and New Zealand v Italy). You can also give feedback to these two writers as their email addresses are available near their comments. I can also welcome ‘Quentin’ from FIRA-AER forum who is helping out with match data sheets. ‘Quentin’ is compiling the Pool D match reports, two of which are now available for viewing. Contact me if you are interested in stats/data and would also like to try your hand at compiling match data sheets. All you need is a limited knowledge of excel, some time and enthusiasm.
