THIS WEEKEND 27-28 OCTOBER

One would have thought that the end of the 2007 Rugby World Cup would have heralded a time of quiet and contemplation. Not so in Europe. Here the European Nations Cup swings into full steam ahead, in the lower divisions, that is. 12 teams are on the field on Saturday whilst Sunday sees an interesting tournament being held in Cyprus. This tournament is ENC 3D. It is great to see teams new to the international scene gathering in one locality for a weekend of heave, shove, dart and dash. Then of course there are the actual games of rugby!

28.10.2007

Cyprus 29,  Azerbaijan 0 in Paphos (ENC 3D)

Cyprus won by 29 points. I predicted Cyprus by 12.

Preview

Cyprus is host to a new style of ENC competition. The bottom ranked European rugby nations will play a week of round-robin competition. Cyprus will be playing its first match in the competition. They defeated Greece 39-3 last season in a friendly and with the home ground advantage, should do well.

Croatia won by 1 point. I predicted Poland by 20.

Reviews

Croatia created an upset win in this pool by defeating the leading tem Poland by 5 penalties to 1 try.

Preview

Poland is the only undefeated team in this pool. Their narrow one point win over Croatia in the first round was away so I would expect them to win at home. Croatia appear to have a new coach. They and Latvia look to be Poland’s only threat in its drive to make promotion to Division 2A for 2008-10.

Preview

This Division looks like being in two distinct halves. Sweden dominated the first round whilst Armenia, who has defeated both table leaders Sweden and Switzerland, looks to be making a late run fro promotion to Division 3B.

Today’s teams, Denmark and Serbia, could well be fighting for survival to stay in this division for 2008-10. Serbia won the first round encounter at home but may well find the Danes a handful on their home turf.

At this stage of the competition Hungary looks like the only team that will threaten Lithuania at the top of the table. The Hungarians won a hard fought match against the Norwegians away in the first round. I would expect the Hungarians to win comfortably at home.

SINGER RUGBY ASIAD (27.10)

This event will take place in Sri Lanka from 3 – 10 November. It was originally scheduled for November 2006 but was postponed due to security concerns within Sri Lanka at the time. The top three Asian nations of Japan, Hong Kong and Korea have indicated they will not attend, whilst Arabian Gulf and Singapore have also decided not to take part.

Those nations that will attend have been seeded into two divisions. The first division will include Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, China-Taipei, Malaysia and Thailand. The second division will include India, Pakistan, Qatar and Iran. For Qatar this will be its introduction to international rugby, whilst Iran recently played its first international rugby match, against Pakistan, winning 22-11 in Lahore.

The draw is yet to be announced.

Previews

Armenia sprung a major surprise in this competition at the beginning of September by defeating first round leader and previously undefeated Sweden. The Armenians were playing ‘at home’ in France. All the players play for French clubs.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Europe Table-Armenia 24th, Switzerland 26th

Switzerland will be tough at home but remember these Armenians all live just over the border so it’s only just an away game. The Armenians continue to improve in this pool and their play against Sweden in early September proved this.
