‘GETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT’

THE GAME OF RUGBY IS RAPIDLY EXPANDING WORLD WIDE. THIS WEB SITE'S MAIN FUNCTION IS THE RESEARCHING, COLLECTING, COLLATING, RECORDING AND UPDATING OF INTERNATIONAL RUGBY RESULTS AND RECORDS

June 2008

Web sites I recommend this month

http://www.fetogrugby.com/Mainsite/

This fairly young African rugby nation has really hit out with such a good site setting the pace for other emerging African nations to do likewise. In French, you need to register to access some information.

http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/

This is a European-based rugby forum that covers the whole world of mainly international rugby, 15s, 7s and women’s. I use much of the data posted on this forum on my web site and are thus truly grateful to those who post me up to date. The main FIRA-AER web site covers all of the European Nations Cup with many official match reports provided. It is an excellent service, again which I constantly refer to.

http://www.heavensgame.com/

Jeremy Beynon has developed an excellent site that covers the game of rugby throughout the world. He has a number of excellent articles that cover the development of the game in unexpected places around the globe

http://www.rugbydata.com

I like to give the competition a plug! This site has an excellent data base for most international rugby fixtures. I often use this site as a cross reference.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY MATCH: CHANGE OF STATUS (06.06)

Latvia played Lithuania Sunday 13 April, Lithuania won 43-17, in what was, at the time, regarded as an official test match. Since then I have discovered that one of the teams fielded 10 replacements and also a note from Latvia RFU; “This game was friendly, not official. Latvia had 2 day training camp in Klaipede (city in Lithuania), Saturday play game with city team and Sunday played friendly mach with Lithuanians”. As a result the match will be deleted from my database.

LATEST NEWS

THIS WEEKEND 28-29 JUNE

France is the last of the Six Nations Championship teams to travel to the Southern Hemisphere over the Northern summer. A team missing a number of top players will take on a more organised and test match fit Australian outfit. Australian Coach Robbie Deans has remained loyal to the team that defeated Ireland in Melbourne.

Argentina will field a stronger side against Italy than the one that lost the second test to Scotland. The Italians have had to face a gruelling trip from Capetown to the interior Argentine city of Cordoba for this test match.

Samoa and Tonga will play for their respective first win at Nuku’olofa in this year’s Pacific Nations Cup.

Japan has a daunting task against the New Zealand Maoris in traditional Maori territory in the city of Napier on New Zealand’s east coast.

The first of the Asian regional tournaments begin on the island of Guam. The local side will host Brunei and the Phillipines. The winners of these Asian regional tournaments will not gain promotion to any divisional Asian tournament for 2009.

On Sunday Australia ‘A’ will face a stern test from Fiji in Brisbane where a sizeable Fijian population resides and will show up in force to support their team.

The CONSUR B tournament winds up in the beautiful Paraguayan capital of Asuncion. The two big teams Brazil and Paraguay will square off with the winner moving on to the next stage of the America’s World Cup qualifying stages. This will see the CONSUR B winner playing against the NAWIRA B tournament winner Trinidad and Tobago.

And finally on Sunday the finals of the CAR Castel Development Cup, Northern Zone, will take place in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Burkino Faso will play Niger in the final.

29.06.2008

Australia ‘A’ 50, Fiji 13 in Brisbane (Pacific Nations Cup)

Australia won by 37 points. I predicted Australia ‘A’ by 8.

Brazil has finally broken the hoodoo of losses against their neighbour Paraguay with a convincing 15-6 win to take the CONSUR B title. They will now play Trinidad & Tobago for a place in the World Cup qualifying Americas round two.

Previews

This match is the grand final of this tournament and what a game it should be. Both teams have everything to fight for and everything to lose. Paraguay has returned to the international scene after a 3 year break. The Paraguayans have had the better record in this tournament and with a wild home crowd behind them should have too much for the traditional ‘foe’.

Australia easily accounted for an under strength French team. The UK clubs have agreed to end their club season by the end of May. Surely it is now France’s turn to demand the same of their clubs and their competition system. Sending below par international rugby teams on southern tours has got to end for all teams.

France and Australia last played each other in 2005. France has not won a test in Australia since 1990 when they won 28-19 in Sydney. That was the final of 3 tests played by the touring French side.

Notes

  • In the starting lineup Palisson and Lecouls will be making their test debuts for France.
  • Of the reserves only Couzinet has played test rugby before; 2 tests against Canada and USA on tour in 2004.
  • Chabal, who played in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, returns after missing all of the 6 Nations tournament due to non selection.

  • Alexander is the only change from the Australian squad of 22 that took on Ireland 2 weeks ago. He replaces the injured Matt Dunning. Alexander was called up from the Australia ‘A’ squad to make his test debut. He is yet to play in a Super 14 match.

Italy 13, Argentina 12 in Cordoba

Italy won by 1 point. I predicted Argentina by 16.

  • Phelan has made seven changes to the side that lost the second test to Scotland. Centre Gonzalo Tiesi, fly-half and captain Felipe Contempomi, number eight Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, lock Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe, props Santiago Gonzales Bonorino and Marcos Ayerza, and back Federico Serra have all been dropped.
  •  Included are a number of Top 14 French-based players.

Both teams need a win to bring them from the bottom of the Pacific Nations table. Samoa has the better record so far with Tonga receiving a thumping from Australia ‘A’ last weekend. Tonga will be at home which is an advantage. Samoa won this game in this tournament easily last year and then fell to the Tongans in the World Cup pool match in Montpellier. This Tongan side is nowhere nearly as strong. Tonga last defeated Samoa, before last year’s World Cup game, back in 2000.
