THIS WEEKEND 19-20 APRIL

Preview

There are a large number of international rugby matches around the world this weekend. There are crucial matches in the European Nations Cup in Divisions 2 and 3. With the Web Ellis Trophy safely housed in South Africa its astonishing to think that the first qualifying matches for the 2011 Rugby World Cup are about to begin in the Caribbean. Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Mexico, Bahamas, Bermuda, Guyana and Jamaica will send their best men’s squads to the Cayman Islands for a week of rugby. The winner will play in a home and away series against the winner of a similar tier tournament in South America later in the year.

19.04.2008

Russia 49, Czech Republic 3 in Prague (ENC 1)

Russia won by 46 points. I predicted Russia by 16.

Reviews

Although this big win places Russia at the top of the table it is only cosmetic. Georgia will win the European Nations Cup so long as they take the field against Spain. With a superior point difference to Russia they need only a point to succeed. The Czech Republic, who failed to win a game during the two seasons of the competition, will be relegated to ENC 2A for 2008-10.

Croatia 15, Andorra 10 in Split (ENC 2B)

Croatia won by 5 points. I predicted Croatia by 15.

Reviews

Croatia’s win may not be enough to stay with Poland and Latvia in this very close competition. The vital game is next Saturday when Poland plays host to Latvia.

Slovenia 10, Luxembourg 3 in Cessange (ENC 3C)

Slovenia won by 7 points. I predicted Slovenia by 3.

Reviews

This win, against their nearest rival, places Slovenia way out in the lead and they remain undefeated. With only the two bottom placed teams to defeat they look certain to win promotion to ENC 3B for 2008-10.
