THIS WEEKEND 15 MARCH

15.03.2008

Wales 29, France 12 in Cardiff (6 Nations International Championship)

Wales won by 17 points. I predicted Wales by 12.

Reviews

This was a most convincing win by Wales to take their tenth Grand Slam of the International Championship.

Previews

This match will decide the winner of the Six Nations International Championship for 2008. For Wales it’s an opportunity to take the ‘Grand Slam’ title for the second time in four years. Wales last won against France in Cardiff in 1999.

Ian Gough will play his 50th test for Wales.

If he takes the field, Duncan Jones will play his 50th test for Wales.

England 33, Ireland 10 at Twickenham (6 Nations International Championship)

England won by 23 points. I predicted England by 24.

Reviews

Ireland, as I predicted, were rudderless without their captain O’Driscoll. England continued their up-and-down form but finished their Championship effort with a win.

Previews

Both teams are out to restore some pride after reputations were left in tatters on more than one occasion. England has lost its last four encounters against Ireland. The withdrawal of Brian O’Driscoll due to injury is a major blow for Ireland. O’Gara will lead Ireland for the first time.

Johnny Wilkinson dropped to the bench for the first time since the beginning of his career.

Italy 23, Scotland 20 in Rome (6 Nations International Championship)

Italy won by 3 points. I predicted Scotland by 25.

Reviews

Italy won its first game under the leadership of Nick Mallett. A last second dropped goal relegated Scotland with the wooden spoon.

Previews

The match is for the wooden spoon in this tournament.

Russia 12, Romania 8 in Krasnodar (European Nations Cup, Div.1)

Russia won by 4 points. I predicted Romania by 7.

Reviews

This was always going to be a close hard fought encounter. Russia secured their place at the top of the ENC 1 table but Georgia, just below, has a game in hand.

Previews

Russia needs to win this test match in order to stay with Georgia at the top of the ENC table. For Romania, in a rebuilding phase, it’s important to win to continue the growing confidence of this young side.

Reviews

Previews

Last reported in FIRA-AER forum that Portugal was having difficulty with visas into Russia and that this match may be postponed.

http://infordesporto.sapo.pt/Informacao/Modalidades/Raguebi/noticiaraguebi_ragselrussiarisco_280208_470068.asp (In Portuguese)

Portugal has trudged into the winter heartland of Russia before and came away with a victory. That was in 2005. For this match the Portuguese are without a number of foreign-based players. Although the team is not without some experience this relatively youthful combination will struggle against a Russian side with home soil and a bitter Siberian wind behind them.

Last Five Encounters
