New Zealand 19, South Africa 0 in Capetown (Tri Nations)

New Zealand dominated this hard physical (when is it not!) encounter against arch rivals South Africa.

Previews

The winner takes all. It has boiled down to that. The chances are that the winner of this match will take the Tri Nations Cup. New Zealand’s dramatic and convincing win against Australia last time out would indicate that the Kiwis are back to their best. South Africa now has the advantage that all their remaining tests in this tournament are on home ground. It should be a cracker of a match.

Kenya 39, Uganda 20 in Nairobi (Elgin Cup, 2nd leg)

Reviews

Kenya outscored neighbours Uganda to retain the Elgin Cup 2nd leg in Nairobi. This gives Kenya a 2 point aggregate following Uganda’s 20-3 win back in May in Kampala.

Second Leg of Elgin Cup

The return Tusker Elgon Cup match between Kenya and Uganda on August 16 at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa ground will not be easy.

Michael ‘Tank’ Otieno, the national 15’s coach explained that Uganda were through to the semi-final of the Africa Zone 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifiers and were 17 points up. “They are also the Africa champions in the second tier,” he added.

The coach admitted the return leg would be a pressure match because Kenyans expected a win at home. “We have to get used to pressure and we will work hard towards achieving that,” he said.

His opposite number, Yayiro Kasasa promised they would not make the same mistakes again like they did last year when they lost the second leg. “We have to sit and plan for this game. It will be tough but we will not be traveling to Nairobi to just play but convincingly win,” he said after steering his team to the semi finals of the Africa Zone 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifiers. Uganda beat Madagascar 32-22 in Kampala.

David Dobela, the South African who is the Uganda Rugby Union Technical Director agreed. “That is a big game and we intend to stay focused,” he said.

The Uganda captain John Musoke is also keen to have the Elgon Cup back in their shelves. “It is going to be hard work but I believe we have an edge,” he acknowledged.

Papua New Guinea v Solomon Islands in Noumea (FORU Cup, Eastern Zone)

Previews

Debutants aim to help Pukpuks

PAPUA New Guinea Pukpuks new caps are aiming to help retain the FORU Cup and maintain Pukpuks dominance in the Federation of Oceania Rugby Union.

The new caps are Kokopo based winger Jeffery Vinavel, Brisbane based winger David Eri, Southern Traders pair Edwin Noki, Jimmy Meria, Highlanders Yaisuo Giheno, Danny Kanasa and Islanders half back Tony Ponda.

Pukpuks will play the Western Conference against Solomon Islands (August 16), Vanuatu (August 20) and New Caledonia (August 23).

Pukpuks return to Port Moresby on August 25 and if successful meet East Conference winners Niue, Cook Islands and Tahiti.

Winners of both conferences will play for the FORU cup on August 30 in Port Moresby.

The Pukpuks were due to leave early this morning for New Caledonia.

Pukpuks coach Billy Rapilla in an interview yesterday said it was also important they retained the FORU Cup and improved their International Rugby Board world rankings.

“Some of the experienced players like Richard Pangkatana and Joe Kautu have been called into the team to add some experience, they were also selected because they played well in the super 4s.

“The challenge is also on the new guys to put their hands up along with the regular players and I can’t say the pressure is on them (the new players) but the pressure is on the whole team.

“This is an opportunity also for them to defend their cup back on home soil so it’s more a team pressure.

“Yes we have been working hard on our working combinations, particularly looking at mobility in the team.

“Bringing in the new players also adds that mobility in the side, especially players like Danny, Giheno and Richard are aggressive players and give us a lot more to go forward.

“Also we are looking at more pace in the back line and with the new rules in place mobility has a big factor in the game.

“We are quite focused on our pool matches and looking forward to playing some big matches in our pool and hoping to come back and play the grand final on home soil.

“It really would be good to play the grand final against arch rival the Cook Islands after they denied us a win in the world cup qualifier.

“Apart from that the fact is we have defended the FORU cup for two years and it’s very important that we maintain that so we can also improve our IRB world rankings,” Rapilla said.

Rapilla said the Pukpuks are currently on 52 points after beating Niue in last year’s FORU cup grand final and their goal is to win the FORU cup again and be under the 40 mark rankings.

The PNG Pukpuks team: Moses Koko, Wesley Thomas, Adrian Dixon, Willie Rikis, Aaron Miai, Daniel Kulmat, Alistair McClay, George Oki, Lawrence Acanufa, Joe Kautu, Jeffery Vineval, Raymond Romulus, David Eri, Gina Ponda, Edwin Noki, Richard Pangkatana, Jimmy Meria, Yaisuo Giheno, Danny Kanasa, Ralph Pombie, Tony Ponda, Roland Namo.

Cook Islands v Niue in Rarotonga (FORU Cup, Western Zone)

Previews

The Cook Islands will play a one-off international rugby match against Niue on Saturday 16 August. The East FORU (Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions) game will be played in Rarotonga at Tereora National Stadium. The delay in confirming the proposed three team tournament programme was upset by the sudden withdrawal of the Tahiti team late last week. The winner of this now one-off match between Rarotonga and Niue will proceed to the Oceania Cup Final to be played at the venue of the winner of the FORU West game to be played on Saturday 30 August .
